Call 2: Working sustainably internationally
Working across borders and collaboratively with international partners over time and not only in one-off, short-term projects
New form of international commissioning (with seven international partners in the recently launched pilot platform Beyond the Now: https://beyond-the-now.com/ ) New International, Coalitional Commissions in Socially Engaged Practice: We are interested to explore digital and offline platforms as experimental sites for blended socially engaged international art practices. Spaces that re-imagine, activate and facilitate cross-border solidarity, creative exchange, inclusion and racial and social justice. We wish to explore the scope for projects which enable creative practitioners, activists, civil society organisations and other actors to re-imagine what community, resilience and social justice looks like in the context of increasing intolerance and the shrinking of public space. Specifically the potential for new international and collaborative architectures to be built through blended commissions that tackle topics such as countering digital hate, freedom of expression, security, displacement, democracy and mutual aid and care.
One of the seven partners in Beyond the Now is Directions Independent Culture (Ettijahat). registered in Belgium as ASBL, and in Beirut, Lebanon. Directions' work engages with the MENA region, specifically supporting artists who are working in Syria or have been displaced across MENA and Europe. In addition several of the partners in Beyond the Now support artists who have been displaced and are situated across Europe but also maintain ties with their home countries. Their practice is therefore cross-border in form and scope - inherently international and informed by a recent history of displacement and a longer legacy of colonialism and the politics of decolonisation. We are therefore interested to build more robust and sustainable supports for this type of international practice and particularly social art practice (with collaborations between artists and networks, communities of place, organisations and institutions), especially in the context of engaging with and alongside communities in a post-pandemic world.
Day and Evening...the time Zones that the partners are located in are a mix of zones given the collective nature of Beyond the Now and where all the partners are based: GMT, CET, and GMT+2

RADICALE 1924 is a newly formed art program in Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, once the summer home of Elisa and André Breton. Sharing intentions with surrealism, we aim to develop digital art projects that address the mechanisms of control enhanced by the pandemic. We are looking to non-productive strategies of resistance as a form to subvert the usual flow of digital content.
