Workshops from the sea. How to construct the future together?

Which challenges for working digitally in the arts carry your interest?

Based on previous workshop experiences, I wonder about the next challenges: How to create the feeling of “togetherness” between participants in a workshop experience? How to construct together, beyond the limitations of nationalities or regionalism? What do we mean by the pronoun “We” in the context of digital media? These questions work as signs to follow, doubts to think and reflect upon.

Why do you want to participate in this call?

For more than ten years, I have been designing workshops that work as a tool for community building and as an esthetic experience. I am interested in how rulesets and performance elements shape these experiences. My task as designer is to organize spaces in which the spectator can become the performer. My drive is to know if we can move beyond the barriers of cultural background, language and species. As such I am interested in Bruno Latour's understanding of the “social” as a fluid and momentary association between human and non-human agents (‘Reassembling the Social’, 2005). I wonder if for a brief moment we can go beyond our barriers, and construct and experience together. This might sound utopian but I find in education and work places, like the workshops, labs and maker spaces, a unique opportunity to make agreements between humans happen, looking forward to the future of our societies on a local and global scale.

How could your work on these challenges have an impact towards fairness and sustainability in the arts of Flanders and Brussels?

Together with the Interaction unit of Luca School of Arts and other cultural agents, We propose to design workshops as a tool for community building and aesthetic experiences. The goal of the project is to create a platform for workshops that enable socialization in hybrid ―physical and digital― environments that act in the local and international realm. It aims to influence the local cultural scenes of Brussels and Flanders by developing a symbiotic relationship with the rest of the globe. Based on Freire's idea that “Whoever teaches learns in the act of teaching, and whoever learns teaches in the act of learning.” This proposal aims to tackle sustainables and fairness concerns by performing workshops that underline the “social” and that imply collaboration and co-creations between participants.
