Call for proposals 3: Working digitally in the arts field
C O M (E) P U L S I V E wants to find solutions for the absence of physical meetings or even a live audience. We support artistic creation by starting from our existing practice, and redesign, reshape and recreating it specifically for online media. This means we need to redefine ourselves, and our work. Automatically this means critically reviewing the position and tools of the artist in society
C O M (E) P U L S I V E is a group of sound artists whose members come from different backgrounds and different locations. We had started to work together on the organisation of live events, be it concerts, installations or participatory works, just as the pandemic hit. As a response to its limitations we started to develop a workflow using the available digital tools to continue working. This forced us to rethink our own works, and the direction we wanted to go as a group. Over the past year this organically morphed into an ongoing research in connecting, rethinking and recreating artistic practices. One of the outcomes was the creation of an online platform, the P U L S E channel. The platform presents new works, specifically designed to meet the requirements, the possibilities and the limitations of the internet. We discovered that these limitations also offer new opportunities. E.g. in our last P U L S E we have broadened our circle by inviting other artists to create works purposefully designed to be experienced online.
Our platform puts artists from Brussels in contact with people from all around the world, strengthening the dialogue between artists living in BE, UK, JP, IS and further. On our website and YouTube channel, we ephemerally present works several times a year. On our Instagram account we present artist talks and open the dialogue to the audience. We want to make these events more frequent and more interactive. We’re striving to not only present ourselves but also to experience and promote the work of other artists. We do all this not by programming a completely new digital surrounding, but by creating a workflow using existing tools to create a scene that starts with us but is no longer geographically bound. In doing so we are creating a much more international scene where we share thoughts and ideas with artists from all over the world. We believe the development and research into such a bottom up designed workflow is of importance to other fields as well, as it is easily adapted for use in many other artistic practices.

Kunstenaars en culturele instellingen hebben hun digitale infrastructuur veelal uitbesteed aan Google, Microsoft, Zoom, ook al weten ze dat ze daarmee de monopolies van multinationals versterken en persoonlijke gegevens delen. Met partners werkt Constant aan een Open Source en collectief gerunde infrastructuur voor videoconferenties die is aangepast aan de behoefte van culturele organisaties.
Met Cripping the Digital ambiëren STUK en KU Leuven Culturele Studies de ontwikkeling van een inclusief digitaal archief rond hedendaagse dans. Hiermee zetten we in op: * De ontwikkeling van een duurzaam en inclusief digitaal dansarchief en danslandschap. * Een kritische benadering van digital archiving door de focus op danspraktijken die ondergerepresenteerd zijn binnen de traditionele canon.
