Oproep 3: Digitaal werken in de kunsten

Visualising the physical distance and the psychological distance by videocall

Naar welke uitdagingen voor digitaal werken in de kunsten gaat je interesse uit?

Since I've moved to France, skyping with my parents is one of the most vital acts . My parents yawn often when we Skype and as yawning is contagious, I can’t stop yawning myself even we are facing two screens. We consider the digital encounter as an alternative way, lacking compared to a physical meeting but still we can find this signals a beautiful moment in human interconnectivity.

During the process of making video by Skype, I thought many impacts how the digital images could show the physical distance and the psychological distance . I know full well that the images of my parents on skype are not my actual parents and it is a simulation. My parents are no longer physical objects (the ONLY shared notion of a physical object is the actual obstacle/gate between realms: the screen) but digital images. We don’t touch each other, but instead, our respective simulations tread each other’s sensoria. I am a digital ghost to the physical them; they are digital ghosts to the physical me. But in the end, it is our humanity which persists. The contagious yawn, the shared memory, the sudden joke, the word at the tip of the tongue, the fight out of the blue: moments so grounded to our whimsical, unpredictable, human nature that manage to transcend above all these intermingled realities at play and make even the longest of distances bearable.

Hoe kan jouw werk met deze uitdagingen een impact hebben op de fairness en duurzaamheid van de kunsten van Vlaanderen en Brussel?

Most of my work shows that how I feel with the distance between where I live and my origin as a foreigner. All the experience I got as a foreigner was quite new, for example ‘Where are you from?’ is the question that I am constantly being asked. It became an important subject that how I will transmit in my work to communicate people who are same status as me or who is not but sharing the life with foreigners. I wish this will be an opportunity to understand each other in our society and bring the discussion what we could see the humanity in the virtual space our digital images.
