My name is Okwei Odili, I am a Nigerian musician with interest in multimedia/audiovisual. I am applying because of the potential of my project/ideas and the opportunity that your organization can offer my team and I, to achieve them. Before returning home to Nigeria in May of this year (2021), I lived as a migrant in Brazil for 5 years. I want to share my experiences/knowledge gained.
My debut album "Òsùmàrè" with my band Aweto which was released in April 2021 with support from Bahia State Government and Onassis Foundation in Greece, united 15 musicians from 2 continents. The outcome showed the benefits of exchange and collaboration, and how important they are even beyond the art field. Diversity to me is the core of humanity. People come from different and every part of the world and just as our faces are different so are our experiences, cultures and orientations. As humans, we share some similar experiences and interests. I believe that we do ourselves a great disservice when we do not accommodate others because of fear of misunderstanding. We will miss out on ideas, opportunities for dialogue and learning, and this in return, does not enable (personal or societal) growth and progress. In my time in Brazil, me and my band received musicians from at least 10 countries, and the experience deeply enhanced my character. One of the main areas of diversity I am very concerned with are toxic stereotypes.
I wish to propose the idea of an online radio which connects Brussels with Africa. As I am a global citizen and artist, my objective also includes us broadening this connection to connect people, artists and arts, organizations and projects from beyond these two continents. On this platform we shall interact, have discussions and panels, share support and opportunities for personal growth, have learning exchanges for different disciplines of art and sciences and host artistic and educational interventions. Radio Connect will also foster and encourage direct collaborations between African musicians and artists.
The use of digital technologies in education has advanced greatly, particularly during the pandemic. However, it is still in its infancy in many art related subjects. Artists struggle to advance the use of digital technologies in teaching and art educators (& students) face challenges that prevent the successful adoption of such technologies in a digital classroom environment.
A current problem in online platforms for art is that they tend to homogenize sense perception. As acoustic investigators, our main challenge is designing strategies in how to include simulated auditory perception and body/space interaction in online art production. Our proposed approach is to investigate dedicated convolutional auralization processing in web api and videogame technology.
