Oproep 3: Digitaal werken in de kunsten

ArtUp Nation explores new possibilities for artists in the changing and digitized economy.

Naar welke uitdagingen voor digitaal werken in de kunsten gaat je interesse uit?

We map out exit strategies for artists in the form of an artist-run-accelerator(ArtUp Escalator). We use startup model as a model for an artwork, engage “startupism” as a concept critically while offering feasible and sustainable models for artists. We ask: What kind of tools do we need to prepare a product/artwork that has use value and at the same time keeps its artistic integrity in the market?

Waarom wil je graag deelnemen aan deze oproep?

We see an unclaimed area between the museum / gallery and the consumer market. Before the startupist attempts come closing in, we are training artists to be the ones that occupy this area in their own artistic terms. Subverting what Naomi Klein said: “…moments of crisis are possibilities to push for the ideas that are lying around” we believe that this is the time to push from our end while the economy is still adjusting to its new course. This attempt is not necessarily is an attempt to play according to the rules of the neoliberal market economy but rather change it from within - it has a pervasive attitude. Some of the projects might actually be invested in suggestions for an overhaul systematic change of the economy in the way that it dictates market-artist relations but we are using this approach in order to change it from within into a more open-sourced, inclusive form. We see this as a trojan horse, an artistic subversion.

Hoe kan jouw werk met deze uitdagingen een impact hebben op de fairness en duurzaamheid van de kunsten van Vlaanderen en Brussel?

The “hackathon” that we are offering for “A Fair New Idea” deals with the economic model (startupism) that isn’t yet properly and artistically explored. Our project will not be the one on focus here but the projects from the local community. We are offering a toolkit that will guide and counsel these artist-run initiatives to become more effective in the market, while insisting on the artistic and ethical aspects that make them. This is why we rely on collaboration both as to participants in the program and also while tailoring our program with mentors who are from the Flanders and Brussels.
